Australian Small Business Champions Awards

October 2010

Amazingly we achieved 4 years in a row of being finalists at these awards. The big difference in 2010 was that the awards were national in stage one, not stage two. We were one of 17 finalists in the Professional Services category from around the whole country, as shown by the web snapshot. And we were a finalist as well in the Entrepreneur category, a rare honour.

Look Home Magazine

October 2010

ADAPT continues to inspire the industry. Hardies have been so impressed with it, they asked us to allow it to be a major part of a special feature in their national magazine. The article discussed the latest initiatives in transportable housing, and heavily quoted Peter after an extensive interview.

HIA Housing Magazine

September 2010

In the major national HIA magazine Housing Peter is heavily quoted discussing ADAPT and the involvement of the school based apprentices. It also discussed the other features Evolve and Treehouse, from previous years. This continues to illustrate the impact of our involvement with these important initiatives, and the interest in ADAPT. And without doubt our profile in the industry has been highly elevated, considering how often Peter is asked to be interviewed!

HIA Building News

September 2010

HIA again featured our three displays, but this time in the national magazine. The angle was in how we incorporated the training of school based apprentices over the projects. This is something we are still proud of being involved in. It also listed the many awards we received for Evolve, Treehouse and Adapt.

Quest Business Achiever Awards

September 2010

We did not win this year, but we enjoyed watching our local vet Meredith Burrows, and all her 8 staff, win their first award. They have been up against us for 5 years! Left shot is Yara, Peter, & Julie waiting at the venue, which was a bit ordinary. (Bring back Tivoli!). The right shot is Meredith with Peter, after getting her award. She was so happy.

Quest – City North News

Quest - City North News - 5 Aug 2010 - Page 26

We achieved finalist status again in the Quest Business Achievers Awards, in Professional Services. 5 times in a row! This is the page from the paper listing all the finalists. We placed an advert too. Would you believe we were up against 3 vets.

BDAQ State Awards Magazine

August 2010

Being a state winner, ADAPT was featured in “Winning Designs Qld”, across 4 pages. The concept of ADAPT continues to receive interest from all quarters.

BDAQ State Awards

July 2010

Peter (left), with Ben Hennig (right), receiving a state BDAQ award from Colin Sonner of Breezway. It was for ADAPT, in the special projects category. Three years in a row we have won this category with our HIA Expo features. Quite a feat. Peter grabbed the microphone to thank Russell Brandon of BDAQ and Kim Coles of HIA! But they deserved the accolades.
Thank you to Imagenative Photography for the images.

HIA Expo Talks

July 2010

Peter has become an in demand speaker at many events. This one is the HIA Expo 2010. The topic was 10 things before you renovate or extend, directed at owners contemplating a building project. The first one is the promotion page in the expo magazine, talking about the speakers. Second is Peter in front of a packed audience spruiking away. Did a talk every day for three days!

BDAQ Magazine

June 2010

The BDAQ (Building Designers Assoc Qld) quarterly magazine featured one of our award winning designs, as a design feature and as the cover – a rare privilege. Swift House is a modern extension on the rear of an old Queenslander cottage on a small lot. It involved heavy negotiation with neighbours and council, and achieved a wonderful private living zone, better linking the house to an extensive rear yard.

BDAA National Awards Magazine

May 2010

TreeHouse from HIA 2008 went all the way to win the BDAA (Building Designers Assoc Australia) National Award for Special Projects. In conjunction with Ben Hennig. This is the page from the awards magazine, and Peter accepting the award at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast. There was quite stiff competition from other states, as the category includes public buildings, and there were some good examples that TreeHouse beat.

BDAQ Regional Awards 2010

April 2010

What a night for Latemore Design. 9 awards out of 9 categories entered. These are just three of them.
First one is Yara accepting best large reno for Barnicott, second is Peter with Ben Hennig on left receiving an award for Adapt in Special Projects, and third one is best use of timber for BarnesCarroll.
It was a great evening with lots of good sponsors, held at Laminex’s headquarters. Thanks Laminex.

Qweekend Magazine

December 2009

The alloneword bar being used again as a set by others.
This time for a fashion shoot in the Qweekend liftout magazine in Brisbane’s CourierMail. They seemed most interested in the interesting wall artwork. Maybe we should commission artists to paint all our projects!

Brisbane News

October 2009

We regularly have advertisements in local magazines, and here is an example. Occasionally there is a bit extra describing our wondrous abilities.

Quest Business Achievers 2009

September 2009

Incredible again. Winning the Business Achievers Award in Professional Services for the fourth time. We were up against some really good businesses, and were surprised to beat such great professionals. The photo is left to right – Peter, Julie and Yara. Andrew and Kaylene had to attend lectures and missed out on lots of partying at the Queensland Art Gallery. This award still means a lot to us as it recognises the practice as a well run business, and rewards all of us.

Features for Cocktail Bar

September 2009

The cocktail bar we designed in Fortitude Valley, in conjunction with the owner Andrew Ferguson, called AllOneWord was featured in several papers. Even on a web based newspaper. If you are after a special place to partake of a drink go to www.alloneword.com.au and join the guest list.

HIA Building News

September 2009

We continue to have influence with HIA and the Building News magazine. The cover in Sep 09 shows Youthbuild school based apprentices working on a floor frame for another AdaptHouse pod. The article inside talks about the 09 Expo and in particular the AdaptHouse feature, and our input.

Brisbane Renovation Magazine

August 2009

AdaptHouse was a feature in this magazine, unbeknown to us. The writer was impressed by the uniqueness of the affordability to provide a designed full house. So many photographers came through the house at HIA Expo 09, we had little idea who they represented.

BDAQ State Awards 2009

July 2009

During the HIA expo we attended the BDAQ state awards for 2009. The first photo (left) shows a staff member Kaylene, receiving a student commendation for her major design project at TAFE in 2009. She was given this by her lecturer Leonardo. Our industry is in good hands! This was a highlight of the night for everyone.
The second photo (right) was for Treehouse, as a joint award with Ben Henning, in the Special Projects category. We can then compete at national level for the fourth time. We won against some amazing projects, which was most pleasing. The photo shows Ben (middle) and Peter receiving the award from Greg Pershouse, President of BDAQ.
Thank you to Imagenative Photography for the images.

HIA Expo Award 2009

July 2009

After the first day of the HIA expo, our feature AdaptHouse hosted a function for the exhibitors sponsored by Yellow Pages. The pods as they were set up were an ideal stage to conduct this function which included awards for the best stands at the expo. Unbeknown to us all, there was a special award for the best feature, which AdaptHouse won. At left on the deck (stage), receiving the award are from left, Peter Latemore, Darrel Biss, the brains behind Apollo Youth Training which built AdaptHouse, and Paul Skews, owner of Apollo.

HIA Expo Magazine

July 2009

AdaptHouse was THE feature of the 2009 Expo. We provided all the images and copy for the magazine article. We know many visitors to the expo came specifically to see AdaptHouse, and most were thoroughly impressed. The article explained the philosophy behind the concept, how it came about, and who was involved.
AdaptHouse is suggesting a new way of thinking about dwelling. The concept allows a dwelling to change over time. The pod idea means wings can be added or moved, as needs change, even subtract and sell portions! They can even go on top. Houses in the future may need to explore these flexible ideas as land becomes less available and housing must be more affordable.

TV advertising

June/July 2009

AdaptHouse was THE feature of the 2009 Expo. It was used for all TV advertising. Click on the image at left to access one of the adverts which used the latest visualisation software from VirtualBuilder3D.
This advertising definitely brought in the crowds.

Queensland Homes

June 2009

Arnett House was featured in a two page spread, using the kitchen. Our colleague www.sublimegroup.com.au did the kitchen, and it features state of the art appliances in an elegant and restrained space. The red glass splashbacks really add drama. We provided the pantry space, and Sublime fitted it out as a second work area, much beloved by the owners.

Building of Adapt

May/June 2009

Photos of Peter inspecting progress on the construction of Adapt, by school based apprentices, through Apollo Youth Training, at Rocklea. The students really enjoy being involved in something so real, and with such a profile. They also value the interaction with industry professionals like Latemore Design.

Quest City North News

June 2009

Latemore Design receives editorial from this local paper, based on our three business awards, in a row. We were used to promote the awards to the public, with the fourth time headline. Four times in a row would be rather amazing!

HIA Building News

May 2009

Adapt, 2009’s HIA feature, designed in conjunction with Ben Hennig of Mercury Design, is the central promotional element for HIA, as seen in this 2 page spread of the state magazine.

HIA Promotional Flyer 2009

March 2009

TreeHouse and Evolve, plus 2009’s HIA feature, Adapt, are all used in this HIA flyer that was sent out to all the Queensland HIA members. HIA continues to use these designs for all promotional material.

Boral Roofing Design Awards 2008

November 2008

In 2008 we entered a design into the national Boral Roofing Design Award. And amazingly we were selected as a finalist for the booklet that showcases the entries. Only 5% receive this honour. We were the only building designer included amongst some of the country’s biggest and best architectural firms. A highlight of the year for us! We called it Wave House. At left is the cover, and our page.

Boral Roofing's Design Award, A DIFFERENT PITCH, was created to promote innovative conceptual residential projects that showcase the talents and expertise of Australian architects, and to encourage higher standards in roof design.

HIA Building News

September 2008

Our involvement with HIA Expo each year keeps bringing us closer to the youth training initiatives in South-East Queensland. This article soon after the expo in HIA state magazine, talks about our design for Treehouse, and what a challenge it presented the young apprentices. Even had our logo.

Quest Business Achievers 2008

September 2008

Truly amazing, winning the Business Achievers Award in Professional Services for the third time. Plus we have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. All in the Brisbane City North region. The photo is the full team, left to right – Yara, Andrew, Kaylene, Peter and Julie, all looking impressed at the latest achievement. We all went up on stage to collect the awards, at the end of a great night. This award means a lot to us as it recognises the practice as a well run business, with great customer service, and high strategic planning principles.

BDAQ State Awards 2008

August 2008

Something special for us was winning two state awards in 2008. The first (left) was for Evolve, as a joint award with Ben Henning, in the Special Projects category. This allows us to compete at national level for the third time. The second (middle) and probably most pleasing was Yara Barrozo accepting the award in unbuilt project category for Napranum, from Bert Priest, life member of BDAQ.

Later in the night (right), Yara and Julie Welch proudly showed off the loot!

Thank you to Imagenative Photography for the images.

Brisbane News + CourierMail

July 2008

Treehouse was everywhere in advertising for HIA Expo 2008. Even images of Evolve from 2007. This included the major Queensland paper CourierMail, even on the back of a glossy inner Brisbane magazine, Brisbane News. Such exposure reinforced the central role Treehouse was to take at the Expo.

BDAQ Magazine Article

June 2008

Treehouse was even used as a drawcard for the Building Designers Association (BDAQ), and it was used in features promoting a conference at the HIA expo. Treehouse was adjacent to the BDAQ stand and many visitors also wandered through there. This ensured the term building designer was even more publicised.

BSA Seminar

June 2008

During the production of Treehouse, BSA (Building Services Authority) heard what we doing and contacted Peter to see if he’d agree to interviews. BSA is the licensing authority for all builders, tradespersons and building designers in Qld. Every year from 2008 they run seminars around Qld, and were preparing for a series in 2009 called Building Better Businesses.
Peter brought in Ben Hennig and Paul Stein, to really expand the power of the interview. They were asked to comment and advise on many topics, so that builders and tradespersons obtain better knowledge. We all heard from several people that we were a really good part of the DVD that accompanied the seminars.

HIA Building News

June 2008

Remarkably Evolve was again featured on the cover of the statewide HIA magazine, as part of promotion for the 2008 Expo. The cover photo illustrated how inundated the display had been, and perfectly illustrated how a unique setup could attract attention. An article inside used Treehouse as a major feature to ensure trades would consider attending. As a leadup to the expo Peter Latemore spoke at a presentation in June to the school students who built Treehouse at Apollo Youth Training at Rocklea.

HIA Building + Renovation Expo Magazine

June 2008

Treehouse was both the main feature of the Expo and the magazine handed out at the expo. Evolve was so successful in 2007 that it was used in all sorts of publicity as well. These pages were prepared using an article by Peter Latemore with images supplied by us from our computer modeller.
Like Evolve, Treehouse was used extensively to promote the expo, even as a mini movie in tv advertising. Treehouse was easily the largest display at the 2008 expo and had thousands of visitors clambering all over it. Like Evolve it was designed in conjunction with Ben Hennig of Mercury Design, and Paul Stein of Seed Landscapes. It was built by Apollo Youth Training, with loads of support from many suppliers. Also look at it in projects on this website.

How To Channel – Evolve Video

February 2008

The Evolve space at HIA expo, was chosen to feature in the How To Channel tv show. This mini video discusses four of the products, describes the whole concept and features an interview with Peter.

Click on the image to view the video.

Thanks to PREMIERMEDIAGROUP, and HOW TO CHANNEL.

Queensland Homes Magazine

December 2007

As part of a feature in Queensland Homes magazine, The Evolve space was included as one of the Outdoor Rooms at HIA expo. It was the larger of the Rooms’, and in a sense anchored these spaces, attracting a very large number of visitors to itself and the others. More photos are in the project\pavilions section.

Small Business Champion Awards

September 2007

We were invited to enter these awards by the main sponsor, our bank, CBA. Like Quest, in professional services. It proved to be quite interesting, as we were shortlisted down to only 4, out of the full state of Queensland. Ultimately beaten by a worthy winner who exports false skin technology. Yara, Peter, Julie went out again for the practice!

HIA Building News

September 2007

After the huge success of the Evolve display at HIA Expo, August 07, it was featured on the cover of the statewide HIA magazine. An article was inside about the youthbuild program which was involved with its construction. Latemore design also was involved in a presentation to the students at Marsden SHS, in recognition of theirs and teachers’ efforts.

Quest Business Achievers 2007

August 2007

Amazing, two years in a row, winning the Business Achievers Award in Professional Services. Again in the Brisbane City North region. The photo is the team at the time of Julie, Andrew, Peter and Yara, all fairly stunned at the achievement. The articles appeared in the City North newspaper soon after.

Evolve Space at HIA Building + Renovation Expo

August 2007

Evolve Space at the expo was the major drawcard. Nearly every visitor went through the space. It also won all the awards for the expo. First photo shows the majority of the HIA youthbuild students showing off the Judge’s Choice award. Second one has the latemore design team in front of the major built element. Third one includes Jeffrey Price of ITI decking and Paul Stein of Seed Landscapes. More photos are in the project\pavilions section.

HIA Building + Renovation Expo Magazine

July 2007

These pages formed the major feature of the magazine handed out at the expo. Evolve Space was used extensively by HIA to promote the expo, and its remarkable similarity to the advanced publicity images impressed all visitors. Evolve Space was the largest outdoor room, designed in conjunction with Ben Hennig of Mercury Design, and Paul Stein of Seed Landscapes. It was built by Jarbou Build, and HIA youthbuild, with loads of support from many suppliers.

HIA Building News

June 2007

An article in HIA building news, which discusses how the youthbuild program is involved in industry, focusing on our ‘evolve’ display at the 2007 HIA Expo, also pictured bottom left. The students fabricated the deck boxes, and then were at the convention centre helping others put the entire display together. Our encouragement of them was well received, and the students valued our mentoring. For the finished product visit pavilions and look at Evolve.

Image Magazine

February 2007

An article written after an extensive interview with us. We were imparting a little knowledge about how a well designed extension can be better than a pure addition. It featured the CookeWeston house.

Quest Business Achievers 2006

August 2006

One of our best achievements so far – winning both the 2006 Business Achievers Award in Professional Services, and the Employee of the Year for Yara Barrozo. In the Brisbane City North region. The employee award was won against over 100 others, and vindicated again how Yara is an important member of the team. The photo is Peter and Julie congratulating Yara, and the articles appeared in the City North newspaper soon after.

Talks at Schools

Macgregor State High School, August 2006

One example of Latemore Design’s direct involvement with some schools. Peter Latemore and Yara Barrozo visited Macgregor to discuss several things with the graphics studies students. This included building design as a profession, help with a design assignment and suggestions to teachers of how to obtain resources.

HIA Building News Article

August 2006

This article occurred after an Immigration Industry Outreach Officer at HIA became aware that Latemore Design has sponsored Yara Barrozo under the skilled migrant program. We were used as an example to the industry of how beneficial this could be when considering the continued skills shortage in the building industry. Read more about Yara in the about us section.

Futurebuild Article

June 2005

This link leads to a stored article that originally appeared in the futurebuild trade magazine. It features the Wilcox pavilion, which used Hybeam and Hyspan engineered timbers to create its special ‘floating’ floor and wedged look.

Home Liftout Magazine Articles (Courier Mail)

November 2003 + March 2005

We have managed to be featured in this magazine, not just once but twice. Most featured buildings are usually by architects, so to be included was a very major achievement. Because of our first pavilion being in the liftout, the editors then considered works from other building designers, which is only sensible as building designers control something like 70% of the domestic built environment. Both of these articles feature our innovative pavilion outbuildings. We were one of the first designers or architects in Brisbane to take advantage of the council’s outbuilding allowance, whereby a small second dwelling can be placed on the property. We have proven that such buildings are economic to build, create wonderful environments, and increase density with little impact on existing infrastructure.

Queensland Homes Magazine Feature + Article

September 2003

Queensland Homes invited Latemore Design and two other building designers to prepare separate sketch designs for a real project. We elected to maintain the tight budget and proposed a pavilion extension on rear with a major orientation to north. Latemore Design is regularly asked by BDAQ to be involved in such initiatives.
In addition Peter Latemore was asked to expound on What to tell your Building Designer. This article may help you understand the process even more.

BDAQ Magazine Article

August 2003

An example article of many written for the BDAQ magazine (Building Designer’s Association of Queensland). This particular one is concentrating on the design process of a pavilion style extension (Tsivis). It was done to also indicate to other building designers, that an extension does not necessarily have to copy the original building.

BDAQ Magazine Article

May 2003

This article in the BDAQ magazine (Building Designer’s Association of Queensland) is explaining to members that building designers are capable of heritage work, and that Latemore Design is a leader in the field. It shows two projects that were awarded prestigious National Trust awards. No other building designer possesses such accolades.

Quest Newspaper Articles

2002/2003

Quest newspapers, local community newspapers in Brisbane, featured Peter in 2002 and 2003, after winning BDAQ awards in those years.

Latemore Design Mascot

Pippa the West Highland Terrier

Actually Peter and Sherry’s dog, but because Latemore Design occupies the lower level of their house, Pippa thinks she is in charge of the office too. When you visit us, you will most likely meet Pippa, who enjoys meeting all comers.
